Come A Little Closer
(tabbed as recorded by Jerry Byrd in 1958 using the amazing "C Diatonic tuning")

Listen to Jerry Byrd: Come A Little Closer

If you are a steel guitar enthusiast like me, you might be surprised to learn just how much Jerry Byrd loved and used his newly discovered “C Diatonic tuning.” From studying Jerry's beautiful heart-warming music over the years, I have really come to appreciate the hard work that Jerry invested into his music and the versatile C Diatonic tuning that he discovered. Here goes, have fun and make others happy!

A tip to help you play the following song is, concerning playing the primary chord featured in this tune (which is the first tabbed chord in the song), is to pick string 3 with your index finger, and also rake across strings 6, 5 and 4 using your thumb at the SAME time. You pick string one using your middle finger. Most players tend to try to rake across strings 3, 4, 5 and 6 using only the thumb, which is sloppy because you will at times hit string 2, causing a sour note. By picking the chord as I explained, there is no chance is accidentally striking string 2. Okay, here goes!

*Note for below: These are two advanced techniques that even new steel guitar players ought to learn right away.
I need to mention two things. First, you place the tip of your bar exactly between strings 1 and 2, so you are
playing each note correct in pitch. Second, when you apply even the slightest pressure to the first string with
the tip of the bar, it will push the first string outward. This causes it to raise in pitch, which sounds off. Also,
if you don't apply enough pressure, the string will buzz and you won't get the desired sound. So what I do, and this
is something important to remember down the road for other songs, is to hold the first string behind the bar in place
using your other fingers of the left hand. This is a beautiful chord that needs to sound right.
